Leather That Stands Out- Our Tips and Tricks to Styling Statement Pieces

Luxury living room styled with leather sofa and oak coffee table

When it comes to leather furniture that really makes an impression, it’s all about statement pieces. Like a giant, curvy couch that makes your guests say “wow!” when they enter your living room. Or a sleek, minimalist leather ottoman that doubles as your den’s coffee table, laden with books and nice wooden serving trays. Or maybe a bright red or yellow chaise lounge in the corner of your office, color-matched exactly to one of the accent colors in the Warhol-inspired pop art piece that hangs above your desk. Style-wise, there’s nothing more irresistible than a leather statement piece, but here at Florida Leather Gallery, we know that styling something so loud and intentionally bold can be a tough task.

Here are a few good rules to keep in mind when styling leather statement pieces.

Use the 60:30:10 rule for color palettes

Color is a big part of what makes a statement piece a statement piece, and with leather furniture, color is of utmost importance. When you’re thinking about using a bold, bright color for your leather statement piece, keep in mind the 60:30:10 rule for color palettes. 60 percent of the room should be done in one shade, 30 percent of the room (likely your statement piece, if it’s a couch or a settee) should be done in a different, corresponding color, and 10 percent of the room should be your accent color. Deciding on these three colors for the room where you plan to place your leather statement piece is key for having the room come together around your piece, and keeping the room from feeling too busy or cluttered.

Lean into texture

When it comes to statement pieces, don’t be afraid to use a little texture, either as an accent to the piece itself, or as part of the styling of the statement piece. For instance, a white leather couch that’s done in a crocodile pattern is much more of a statement piece than a plain, smooth white leather couch. Unless, of course, you decide to level up that smooth plain leather couch by mixing in pillows of contrasting textures like burlap or velvet, or even suede. You can even think about texture in room accents like drapes, lighting, and carpeting to help give your statement piece a bit more to play with visually in the room.

Mix in patterns

Like texture, patterns can be very helpful in styling with a statement piece. There are two schools of thought when designing with patterns. You can “power clash,” meaning that you pair two violently different patterns with each other. Think a plaid blanket on a paisley armchair. Power clashing can be difficult with leather statement pieces because there are not too many leather pieces which are done in patterns. The other way to style with patterns is to use them as an accent to the larger color palette, as the 10 percent “color” in the 60:30:10 rule we mentioned earlier.

Let the piece shine

Most importantly, however you decide to style for your leather statement piece, keep in mind that balance is important. If there is too much going on in the room, your statement piece will clash with other design elements, or worse, fade into the background.
