Leather furniture is a luxury that anyone should be able to enjoy in their home, regardless of whether you have kids, pets, (or even a messy partner). It’s common for many pet owners to feel apprehensive about investing in leather furniture due to the fear of it being ripped to shreds by the claws of their furry friends. This is a common worry our leather experts hear- and that’s why we want you to know all our expert tips for maintaining a household full of luxurious leather pieces and feisty felines. Today, we want to share some of our top tips for safeguarding your furniture from cat scratches and keeping your leather looking brand new.

Invest in Furniture Protectors

If your cat has already managed to cover chairs, sofas, and most of your furniture with scratches, scratch covers may be a viable quick fix if you’re not quite ready to part ways with your current pieces from not only scratches but a lot of times, from spills (think cat pee or cat vomit) as well.

In essence, these covers act as scratching posts/mats you can throw over your sofa. Typically, people will place these along the front, armrests, or the sides of the sofa where their cat tends to scratch. This not only covers up pre-existing damage but also allows cats to give in to their need to scratch in a way that’s not harmful to your furnishings.

Add Some Extra Scratching Possibilities To Your Space

If you are lacking scratch-worthy items around your home, this may be the reason your cat is going to town on your beloved sofa.  Your cat may just be scratching your sofa because when they get the itch to scratch, there are simply no other items nearby to scratch on.

Want the easiest solution to this problem? Increase the number of scratchable items in your home, concentrating primarily on places your cat (which are usually where you as well) spends a lot of time. Simply test this out by placing a scratch post close to the spot your cat typically scratches on your leather couch. Make sure to take note of what side of your sofa your cat is drawn to. If that works, gather as many scratchable items as possible, so your cat is no longer interested in human furniture as a source of entertainment.

Keep in mind that if you’re limited on space, there are quite plenty of thin, tall cat posts and/or trees you can add to your home. Floor-to-ceiling cat trees are decorative, space-saving ways sources of cat entertainment that’ll keep your pet’s kitty claws away from your couch. Contrarily, if you have a lot of space, and therefore need quite a lot of scratch able surfaces, you may want to consider placing cardboard cat scratchers for your cat around the house for a more lowkey look.

Roll Out The Rugs!

Really hate the idea of having your home muddled with cat toys? If you would prefer your cat scratch surfaces remain under the radar, we suggest you experiment with rugs! Believe it or not, when placed strategically this can provide a possible quick fix to your cat’s feisty tendencies. We suggest placing a rug (like a thick, fluffy Persian-style rug) right in front of your leather sofa’s feet or placing a scratchable mat or fur over the armrest to keep your cat from scratching at your furniture.
