How to Care for Your Sarasota Leather Sofas and Furniture Correctly

When decorating your home, it is important to choose furniture that speaks to you and echoes your individual sense of style. If you want something for your living space that is beautiful and luxurious, choose leather. Nothing beats the feeling of sinking deep into a leather sofa or reclining chair, and the way it can immediately add style to any room is truly incredible.

In general, leather is actually quite a durable fabric that makes a great choice for those looking for longevity in their furniture.  Still, there are a few important things to know about caring for your leather furniture, including how to make it last a long time and how to prevent stains and damage.

Placement is key

For starters, you should also try and minimize the sun’s glare on your leather pieces. Exposure to direct sunlight can cause leather furniture to crack or appear dull. To maximize the longevity of your leather, keep it away from large windows or other prolonged sources of direct sunlight.

For those with pets, try distracting your furry friends from your leather furniture with scratching posts and plenty of toys to choose from.

Pro Tip: Condition your leather furniture

While leather is naturally resistant to normal wear and tear, if you want to make sure that it stays clean, you can condition your leather furniture. Conditioning can be done after cleaning and helps to keep your leather sofas and chairs soft, supple, and like-new. Simply use a good commercial quality leather conditioner, and avoid choosing anything that has silicone or wax.

Water stains are an easy fix

If you do end up with a stain, there are ways to address the problem. One of the most common types of stains that occur on leather furniture are water stains. Experts recommend blotting the water spot while it is still wet, if possible. Once the spot dries, you can use a small, damp cloth to rub in gentle, circular motions over the affected area. It is important to not scrub the spot roughly – doing so can make the spot look more conspicuous. By blending the spot gently into the rest of the surface, the stained area might not even be noticeable.

Oil and grease stains may call for further measures

Oil, grease, and ink stains are a good deal harder to remove than water stains, but there are still some ways to lessen the appearance of the stain on your leather sofas or chairs. For oil and grease stains, try blotting the area with a soft cloth, to try and remove excess oil or grease. After removing any excess, sprinkle some cornstarch on the spot and let it sit for around fifteen or twenty minutes. After it has soaked into the stain, remove the cornstarch with a soft-bristle brush. If the stain still remains, just repeat the process. Ink stains can be harder to remove. To reduce the appearance of a troublesome ink stain, blot the area with a soft, dry cloth, and then rub a small amount of hand soap in circular motions over the stain.
