Can You Mix Leather & Fabric In Your Living Room?

Can you mix leather furniture and fabric or upholstered furniture? This seems like a simple question, but it is one of the most often asked in design stores all over the country. Maybe you’ve inherited your grandmother’s antique fabric chair, but your style is modern. Perhaps you are getting married or blending homes with very different furniture tastes from you. There are plenty of opportunities to integrate different styles and preferences and still have a beautiful and cohesive space.

You won’t find a design rule prohibiting combining leather and fabric furniture in one room. In fact, it is recommended to mix and match pieces. This hybrid design concept can add dimension and textural interest.  Keep these three principles in mind when choosing pieces for your room:

BALANCE

Use accessories such as throw pillows, area rugs, and blankets to keep a central design theme. Textiles and patterns can add interest so that even a neutral color palette won’t look one-dimensional or boring. Allow one piece, such as a leather couch or chair, to be the room’s focal point and select items to complement it.

PROPORTION

The trick to combining both leather and fabric furniture in a space is all about proportion. One item should not overwhelm the other by scale or size. The goal is for the area to feel unified and whole, despite using very different eclectic pieces. Choose a beautiful leather couch as an anchor and focal point in the room. Allow this to be the most significant piece of furniture—the star of the show. Choose smaller pieces with different colors and textures to complement the leather. You don’t want to make the room too busy, but highlight a leather sofa’s natural beauty,  with style and personality around it!

COLOR

We recommended selecting your large focal point pieces in a classic shade. If you want to mix fabric patterns with leather furniture, it’s best to keep the leather furniture understated and accent with other bold and robust color palettes around it. By keeping the main pieces of furniture timeless, you’re allowing the space freedom to evolve.

The secret to your room taking shape holistically is curating items that you love. A leather couch in the perfect shade of saddle. Or an upholstered chair that reminds you of your grandmother’s home. Stay aware of the color, proportion, and balance of the room, and you no doubt will have a flawless combination of both leather and fabric furniture.
