One thing is clear, 2020 gave us more time than ever before at home. The increased amount of hours logged at home, combined with the necessity of creating functional spaces where there were none before, has completely tipped the design world upside down. Many of the design trends we’ve seen for years will be on their way out this year. Say goodbye to shiplap, monochromatic rooms, and white kitchens. If we are all going to be stuck at home, we need to bring life back to our spaces: bright colors, functional rooms, natural elements, and lots of sunshine. As we move into the second half of 2021, we are still accruing hours from home as we work, educate, live. Let us surround ourselves with things we love in 2021 and call it self-care. Here are the top 4 interior design trends we will see through 2021:
Light! All the natural light!
Who doesn’t need more sunshine these days? Everywhere we look, we see big bright rooms filled with the sun in 2021. If we are sitting at desks in our homes, we should feel like we are experiencing the seasons. What’s not to love about this trend? Look for oversized windows, contrasting trim and details, big French doors, and minimal window dressing. The minimalist approach is taken for the windows, highlighting their design and light. People are getting rid of their black curtains and trading them for sheer, airy replacements or leaving the windows bare. No need for curtains if you’re trying to let in the maximum amount of light.
Bright Colors
Monochromatic and neutral pallets have been in style for too long and maybe feeling a bit boring. One of the top design trends of 2021 is color. Shades of blue are trending, with other bold, robust hues showing up in furniture and paint colors. Taking risks in your design has never been more fun! A recent poll found 40% of American’s took on at least one home improvement project last year. That is almost half of us! Brighten up those walls! Paint the bathroom hot pink. Choose bright yellow leather for the couch. You won’t regret having pops of color to bring life to your space.
Natural Elements
Wicker bed frames, rattan accent furniture, jute rugs, linen curtains. Look for traditional décor items in natural fibers rather than synthetics. Leather furniture is a timeless choice when looking for natural and rustic elements in your home. The right piece of leather furniture can transform an entire room. Customizing leather furniture has never been easier; you don’t have to choose between bright color and texture or traditional dark brown leather. With over 100 customization options on unique dyed leather, you can order that bright yellow couch that will be a showstopper!
Functionality
Many of the past interior design trends have focused on the spaces in our home we use the most. Kitchens have always been a focal point for design and resale value. We have always lived in our kitchens. Now we are seeing more focus on other rooms that can be redesigned to better meet their occupants’ needs. We can no longer reserve our dining room for formal occasions. The past year has taught us that our homes must serve multiple purposes. What was once a dining room is now a home school command center. This has created the trend of multiple-use spaces. Desks are set up with craft tables, offices shared with playrooms. Dining rooms that double as zoom boardrooms. You are probably already on this trend by looking for pieces that serve multiple purposes, have a small footprint, and can be easily moved around your home as needed.
